Building Organizations That Bend But Never Break [ Free Download ]

When Maurice Mitchell’s groundbreaking article “Building Resilient Organizations” was released in November of 2022, it quickly became a flashpoint for all of us in movement and nonprofit spaces. Even now, almost two years on, it continues to ripple through our sector, offering solutions to our issues with a radical, joy-centered and anti-white supremacist viewpoint.

This is why Rockwood is extremely honored to help launch Building Resilient Organizations: Toward Joy and Durable Power in a Time of Crisis, a new zine based on the original article and created by Maurice Mitchell and members of the Progressive Leaders Group:

As Maurice shared with us:

“The need to build resilient organizations and have a defined North Star doesn’t take a backseat when we have elections. Quite the opposite. In these times, we must stay focused on our 10-, 20-, or even 50-year goals and move with urgency towards the world we want to live in. While we must keep authoritarians from gaining governing power, we cannot forget that our duty is to articulate long-term, transformative visions for our organizations, and foster and support values-aligned, high-impact workplaces.”

This zine is a completely new way to engage with the insights from the original piece. It’s the playbook for how we’re going to get to where we need to go, to unite across differences in strategy, politics, and goals, and stand against authoritarianism and white supremacy in all their forms, with love and joy.

The zine is available in both English and Spanish, and includes:

  • A new foreword by Maurice Mitchell
  • Reflection questions to help you go deeper with the text
  • Exercises to use to build your organization’s resilience
  • A list of resources to support you in transforming your organization
  • Beautiful design by The Beacon Design Collective

In order to face the rising threat of authoritarianism and build a world where everyone is safe and fulfilled, we need to be like bamboo – we must bend but never break. And our ability to do that lies in our collective power, our connection to each other and to our planet. That’s how we’re going to shatter oppressive structures and win this fight. That’s our strength.

That’s resilience.
