In 2014, we will award our first Changing the Way Change is Run Scholarships to two Oakland nonprofit and social change leaders whose work serves boys and men of color.
Rockwood is honored to be able to support more leaders who are working towards changing the historical and systematic causes of disparities like these:
- Boys and men of color (BMoC) make up, “70 percent of California males age 24 and under and face disproportionately high levels of unemployment and underemployment — far higher than whites of comparable ages.”
- In Alameda County in 2010, 73% of homicide victims were men of color.
- In 2012, 50% of African American men in East Oakland were unemployed, and life expectancy in West Oakland was “fifteen years less than life expectancy in the wealthier, whiter Oakland hills area.”
How to Apply for the 2014 Changing the Way Change is Run Scholarship
We invite leaders who are working at small, Oakland-focused organizations that serve boys and men of color to apply for Rockwood’s 2014 Changing the Way Change is Run Scholarship. The applicant’s organizational budget should be less than $500,000. The scholarship will cover the training fees, and room and board fees for a session of Rockwood’s Art of Leadership training. Scholarship recipients will be responsible for their travel costs, and a $100 nonrefundable deposit.
To apply for the Changing the Way Change is Run Scholarship, please go to: www.surveymonkey.com/s/RockwoodOaklandLeaders. The deadline to apply is: July 3, 2014.
Rockwood loves having its home in Oakland where we are neighbors with hundreds of social change organizations doing amazing work. We often cross paths with alums walking around Lake Merritt, in coffee shops, and at events. Rockwood’s Board of Directors has deep roots in the city, and the majority of our staff lives in Oakland. While our work extends nationally, we are deeply invested in our Oakland community.
Please spread the word about this opportunity to your friends and colleagues. Thank you!

Is there going to be another training that is not solely focused in oakland? I’m a youth organizer from Fresno. Thanks, I hope to hear from you guys soon.
Hi Cesar!
We have Art of Leadership trainings on the East and West Coast for all kinds of social change leaders. Most of our West Coast trainings are at retreat centers in Northern California (e.g Calistoga, Sonoma, Santa Cruz).
